2020 Year in Review and Video

At the end of every year I take a look back and reminisce on the art I created, the adventures I had and what I’d like to accomplish in the coming year. I enjoy creating a little montage of the highlights of the year in a video, and sharing it with you. Below is my video, 2020 Year in Review; it’s about three minutes long.

I think going forward in 2021, I’m going to set aside oil painting and contribute my time to working in pastel. I will be doing a series using birds as my subject to thoroughly explore this medium in the beginning. I’ve really fallen in love with pastels as they leave me more room to create instead of thinking about mixing colors as in oil painting. I do still love oil painting, but it feels like there’s so much more gear to carry and more technicalities than with pastels.

This year I purchased a pretty awesome plein air set up for pastels, so all I had to carry was a pastel box and a tripod. Since pastels don’t have a unique smell like oil paints do, I didn’t have yellow jackets buzzing me thinking I had food for them. That was great in itself because I’ve been stung by a yellow jacket and it’s worse than a bee!

Because of the year’s many lockdowns and such, I didn’t have as many opportunities to paint plein air, so a lot of the work I did, was using flowers from my garden in the studio. This coming year, after my bird series, I hope to really explore florals using pastels. That will be fun, since I grow a lot of flowers. Last spring I planted two new varieties of Lilies in the flower garden, so I’m looking forward to this spring and using them as my subjects. My goals for 2021 are to put more emphasis on creative time and thereby creating more blog posts to keep my viewers interested.

I hope you enjoy this little video montage, 2020 Year in Review and that you have a Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year! May 2021 be a better year for us all.

Much Love ~ Rhonda
